Background Check

By Susan Pai on July 20, 2011 in Working with Susan

Background check for hiring an immigration attorneyAll applicants for a U.S. immigration benefit are subject to criminal and national security background checks to ensure they are eligible for that benefit. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Federal agency that oversees immigration benefits, performs checks on every applicant. As such, the Law Office of Susan Pai may require that a client submit to a full background check prior to submission of their application for immigration benefit. A background check is useful in determining whether any errors exist on your record, whether you have been the victim of identity theft, and whether there are any issues that may delay or defeat your immigration application. During a test of the latest version of Lexis/Nexis Background Check Services, Attorney Pai discovered a woman with a very similar name, who lived very close to an old address, had a negative judgment entered against her. This negative judgment was showing up as a possible match to Attorney Pai. We contacted the Plaintiff in this case and verified that although the name and address were very, very similar, the Defendant was a woman who was 20 years older than Attorney Pai. These are the types of issues we are looking for on your background check so that 1) we can clear up any errors, and 2) we are completely prepared for any and all questions by USCIS.

We recommend you use Accurint to obtain a full background check. In some cases, we you have to submit a fingerprint card to the FBI for a full NCIC history (e.g., in the event that you have convictions in other jurisdictions).
